Pennmanship Atlantic 72

Building on the already iconic Atlantic Cat series Chris White has outdone himself with the design changes incorporated in the “P-ship”. And as always Aquidneck Custom has brought the updated design to life in stunning fashion. All at under 44,000 pounds.

PenmanshipPENMANSHIP, CWD Atlantic 72 #2 is an all-carbon fiber, foam, and epoxy custom build. She has of course kept the beautiful easily driven hull form ubiquitous in the Atlantic cat series. What has changed is now, rather than the familiar geometric house shape of the Atlantic Cat series the PENMANSHIP sports a new sleek curved pilothouse that nearly spans the entire beam width of the boat.  While driving from inside, this new house affords expansive 360-degree views and total protection from weather and waves.

Inside the house to starboard is the navigation and secondary steering station. Outboard to starboard is the split level fully equipped gourmet galley. Adjacent the galley for casual snacking is bar top and seating on four custom Carbon stools.  To port is a convertible height dining table that can seat 10 or can be lowered into the daybed configuration. Forward of the dining table is a settee that comfortably seats 4. Opposite the galley on the port side split level is a large laundry area with an oversized folding desk top for home schooling or laundry tasks.

Down below forward in each hull is a spacious sail and equipment locker. Each of these lockers can be accessed from below through water tight hatches, or on deck through flush oversized custom carbon hatches.

Accommodation and plenty of personal storage is accomplished in 6 double cabins. Each aft cabin has its own fresh water head and sink. Forward in the hulls are three more spacious heads complete with shower, fresh water electric heads, and again plenty of storage. Port side mid hull also has a stainless-steel topped work bench which is of course imperative to a world cruiser.

Machinery SpaceThe twin auxiliary Volvo D3110’s are located under the galley and laundry areas and easily accessed through large interior hatches. Surrounding each engine in that very accessible space is another easily accessed separate sound enclosure that keeps the engine noise to very low level.  The drive train is well designed for long running with sturdy oversized ZF transmissions, CV joints mounted to thrust bulkheads and coupled to 35mm aquamet 22 Stainless shafts turning counter rotating 20” Flex-O-Fold 3 blade folding props. Tankage is all integral to the hull. Cruising range is over 1700 miles with a fuel capacity of 430 gallons. Full water capacity of 400 gallons, as well as a black water tank capacity of 125 gallons / hull.

Penman ship also boasts custom ducted DC air conditioning – (that works perfectly), a 750 gallons/day water maker, and a Mastervolt C-zone system powered by Li-ion batteries that are safely contained in separate floodable compartments. All of this is powered by a 5KW solar array. On the p-ship there is no gen-set or additional large alternators.

Steering is smooth as silk through a simple and efficient cable and quadrant system utilizing pre-stretched Dyneema cables to join it all together. And when you have had enough hand steering you can rely on the robust and highly dependable NKE / Lacombe and Schmidt hydraulic auto pilots.

StoolsComplementing the custom layout is a custom painted full gloss awl-grip interior, vertical grain Teak soles, Red Gum joinery, and custom lighting. The finishes and details throughout are stunning both above and below the cabin soles.

On the fully covered aft deck is a unique two dingy davit system, deck shower and fresh water wash down.  Dining is accommodated with a custom-built table with seating for 8 adults. This table converts to a coffee table or down low to another day bed. Inside the all-custom carbon furniture is plenty of dry storage. Swing wide the oversized aft door and open the aft cabin windows and the inside mingles with the out creating an open-air lifestyle that would be the envy of any European café!

The custom-built carbon rig stands 110’ above the water but the sail plan like all the Atlantic cats it is easily managed by a small crew. The traditional pin-head main and two furling jibs gives a wide variety of comfortable sail combinations to handle most any conditions.

The forward cockpit is surrounded by large electric and manual Harken winches to easily handle sheet and halyard loads. Anchoring is accomplished with 300’ of 10 mm German made SS chain and an Ultra 100-pound 316 SS anchor. The chain is handled by a pair of Lewmar V4/5 electric windlass with remote wireless actuation.

Penmanship is joy to sail, a nearly perfect cruising multihull capable of 300+ miles / day. She is a creation born of the collected talents of master builders, ingenious engineering, and thoughtful design.
